KCFOOTBALL.COM COMMENTARY:

October 16 - at Raiders, Packers, Broncos...all winnable games. Is 6-3 a possibility?

October 14- Chiefs win 27-20 ...Chiefs offense gets rolling against 2nd and third string subs on Bengals defense....  Has anyone seen anyone on a football field as pissed off as Benny Sapp was at T.J. Houshmandzadeh? What was the story behind that? ... Strong passing game was the key to Chiefs offense.  Jeff Webb, Bowe and Tony Gonzalez all looked like Pro Bowlers... Jarrod Allen pressured and got 3 sacks against second string Bengals left tackle.

October 7 - Chiefs lose 7-17 psst...Don't tell anyone...You heard it here first: Jacksonville is good. Jacksonville will beat the Colts on October 22.
Chiefs once again were too stubborn about running the ball when passing to Gonzalez and Bowe was effective. Larry Johnson had  about 10 yards total rushing. Chiefs kick returns and third down defense were awful.

September 30 - Chiefs hang in during the first half with a pair of field goals and turn up the defensive heat in the second.  Offense opens up in the second half with passes to Gonzalez and Bowe.  Phillip Rivers looks as bad as Rex Grossman two weeks prior but this time the Chiefs get the 30-16 win.

September 23: Just before halftime Larry Johnson and Damon Huard get pissed off and scream from the field at the coaches.  Chiefs come out throwing in the second half and win  13-10 over an injury riddled Vikings squad.
September 19: Chiefs best shot at winning a game in the first quarter of the season is Sunday at home against the Vikings. Vikes QB situation is in doubt as Jackson is injured.

Didn't Vikings #2 QB Kelly Holcomb have a career day against the Chiefs filling in for some hot-shot rookie 7 or 8 years ago?
Chiefs loss at Texans does not look as bad in light of their 34-21 victory at Carolina.

September 16: Chiefs lose at Chicago 10-20. Chicago's two TDs are a 73 yard punt return and a fat tackle eligible pass on the goal line.
When will the Chiefs stop throwing those swing passes to Larry Johnson? It never works.
Chiefs had a nice flea-flicker touchdown pass called back for an illegal something or other at the line of scrimmage.  Is this indicative of inadequate coaching, preparation, concentration or all three?
Rookie receiver Bowe looked promising.
Brady Croyle looked good in a brief appearance near the end of the game.
Is Rex Grossman the worst quarterback in the league?

September 9: Chiefs lose at Houston Texans 3-20.

August 12: Chiefs at Browns pretend game. Brody Croyles first quarter interception might be the worst in NFL history....No Chief anywhere near the ball.....
The game was boring mostly......  Debate  at our table: is this game  more like a high school game or a  junior high school game?

August 11: I saw the beginning of the HBO show with the sound turned off. I was thinking "Who is that skinny white high school kid they are showing? He must be one of the coaches sons." I asked my neighbor. He said: "Oh....thats the new quarterback". Scary! .........Was it just me or was that show really boring? The narrator is awful.

August 9th: If the resale price of Chiefs tickets on EBAY is any indication, support for the Chiefs is quite low. Tickets for most Chiefs games are available for below face value.

July 28 2007: Camp opens. Priest Holmes shows up after 2 year absence at age 34. Larry Johnson is holding out for big money. Dante Hall, Trent Green and Will Shields are gone. Kyle Turley re-signed. Kyle Turley Video in Real format.

January 6 2007 Chiefs lose decisively at eventual Super Bowl winners Indiannapolis
January 2- Chiefs will play Saturday at 3:30 against the Indianapolis Colts. Larry Johnson may match up nicely against the Colts weak run defense.

December 31- I turned down front row club level tickets to this game! Chiefs win an exciting high scoring game over Jacksonville. Out of the playoffs, Pittsburgh nonetheless wins at Cincinnatti to eliminate the Bengals , New England gets what is for them a meaningless win at Tennessee to eliminate the streaking (6-0) Titans and most incredibly San Francisco tromps through eight feet of snow to win at Denver and the Chiefs are in the playoffs!

December 23- Chiefs win at Raiders to pull to 8-7

December 17- Boring offense is ineffective for the second week in a row. Trent Green was getting buried by Charger rush. Chiefs lose 9-20.
Chargers offense benefited by a trick play fake punt and a screwball blocked punt and recovery for a first down.
The NFL thought this game was worthy of a Sunday night prime time shift?

December 14- Lamar, Chiefs owner, AFL and Super Bowl pioneer dies at age 74 of prostate cancer.
I remember attending a Chiefs game a few years back and seeing an tiny economy rental car being towed from the Gold parking area near the VIP entrance of Arrowhead stadium. Lamar had arrived from Dallas and rented it at the airport and driven himself to the game, somehow convinced the parking attendents to let him into the Gold area. The car was so out of place amongst the SUVs, limosines, Lexus' and Mercedes that it drew the attention of a security guard and got towed.

December 11- Some suggest that the Chiefs do not deserve a playoff berth. If they win at San Diego, Oakland and come home and beat the Jaguars, they certainly do deserve to be in the playoffs. The Chiefs need help though, Bengals need to lose at the Colts (probable) and the Jaguars need to lose at red hot Tennessee Titans.
December 10 - An early missed easy field goal, a punt then, three consecutive Trent Green turnovers had  the Chiefs down 6-0 at halftime. The Chiefs secondary gets burned for  an 87 yard  touchdown pass but Kansas City could only respond with 5 minute drive and a field goal.  Baltimore sits on the ball for 9 minutes of the fourth quarter and get a short touchdown run, effectively ending the game at 2:55.
Eddie Kennison caught one of two passes for 13 yards and Sammi Parker looked terrified ever time he got near the ball.
December 3 - Devastating loss at Cleveland (4-8) drops the 7-5 Chiefs into 5 way tie for one of two wildcard playoff positions. Chiefs led 28-14 at the start of the fourth quarter. Chiefs again make a career benchwarmer quarterback look like a hall of famer.  Ryan Sims looked fat and clumsy subbing at DT. The 6 million dollar man Ty Law looked like he was blocking his own teammates on at least two plays.

November 23- Thanksgiving with Larry Johnson's 34 carries for 157 yards. Micheal Bennett added two carries for 56 yards.  QB Trent Green was a little rusty and went 13-22 for 161 yards, 0 TDs and one interception.   Jake Plummer didnt get much help from his receivers but his running backs had only 14 carries for 28 yards. Chiefs and  Broncos are tied for second in the AFC West at 7-4 and would make the playoffs as a wildcard team if the playoffs were held today.
Chiefs next game is at Cleveland Sunday December 3rd.

November 19- A win is a win. The game plan was to play close and wait for the Raiders to self-destruct in the fourth quarter. It worked. An offsides and a 4th and one face mask aided an 80 yard Chiefs drive culminiating in a 1 yard Larry Johnson touchdown.
Chiefs trailed 13-7 at halftime and comeback to win 17-13

November 18 -Chiefs host Oakland tomorrow at noon on CBS. Tony Gonzalez, Brian Waters and Derrick Johnson are all out with injuries. Starting OT Kevin Sampson is still .
Chiefs are favored by 9 points. This is remarkable considering the recent history of close games between KC and the Raiders. Expect a low scoring game: Raiders play tough defense, bad offense and Chiefs offense is injury riddled.
November 12- Disappointing loss at Miami 10-13 primarily due to an ineffective offensive line. Chiefs played without standouts Brian Waters and LB Derrick Johnson.  Tony Gonzalez's shoulder is hurt and out for the Oakland game and will play in severe pain the rest of the year if he can play at all. KC drops to 5-4 in the AFC west with Charges and Broncos at 7-2. Remarkably they are still tied for the 6th best record in the AFC.

November 5- Another amazing fall day in Missouri....too bad the St. Louis fans have to be indoors to watch their team self destruct. Chiefs led early 17-0 on three Rams turnovers.  Larry Johnson highlighted the first quarter with a 3rd and 9 45 yard run from his own 3 yard line. KC had to punt but the RAMS fumbled at their own 15 and Chief punched it in with Johnson on SIX consecutive runs. A 46 Damon Huard pass to Samie Parker and a short toss to Tony Gonzalez and the Chiefs were up 14-0. Moments later Rams RB Jackson fumbled at his own 30 and Chiefs Lawrence Tynes hit a 42 yarder.
St. Louis moved the ball easily on the next drive and scored from the 2 to make it 17-7
LJ dropped an easy little swing pass (he does this every game at least once) to kill the next Chiefs drive.
The Chiefs defense held on the next drive and Huard led KC to a Tony G touchdown on a 2 minute 80 yard drive with Johnson runs and a Kennison reception in the mix.
Rams moved easly for 60 yards and added a field goal to mak it 24 10 at the half.
The teams traded punts for 10 minutes in the third quarter until the Rams sustained a 6 minute drive culminating in a short touchdown pass.
The Chies punt again and drive to the Chiefs 26 and then get pushed back  on three penalties and punt.
The Chiefs march on Rams penaltys a 15 yard LJ run and score on the pass of the game to Kris Wilson.
The Rams drive 75 yards but fail to score from the Chiefs 5 with about 2 minutes to go.  Final score Chiefs 31 Rams 17.
At 13:33 in the 2nd Allen sacked Bulger and recover a fumble at the KC43. Two
October 28- Chiefs 35-Seattle 28 the cute Chiefs fan next to me said "This is what you pay your money for". A beautiful fall day and a game more entertaining than Hollywood could have scripted.  Chiefs turn certain blowout victory into near defeat.
Larry Johnson had 155 and four touchdowns (whooooooo Bundy!)
5 Seattle starters did not play including the league MVP running back and starting quarterback.
A botched field goal attempt resulted in a Kelly Herndon touchdown about 20 feet from where I was sitting. The winning touchdown and 2 point conversion were right in front of us as well.
Full play by play from NFL Game Center.
Chiefs are 4-3 one full game behind the 5-2 Chargers and Broncos.

October 27- Chiefs quarterback Damon Huard is questionable for Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks. Huard has a possible left labial adhesion.

October 22- at Chiefs 30-27 over the San Diego Chargers
Chiefs tough defense forced early turnovers which were converted to an early 17 point  lead.
Larry Johnnson regained form with 132 yards and two touchdowns.
A Don Denkinger-class pass interference bad call against Ty Law allowed the Chargers to tie late in the fourth quarter.
Kicker Lawrence Tynes earlier missed a 42 yarder and an extra point. He made a game winner that was called back for a penalty,  backed up 5 yards and hit a career-long 53 yarder for the victory.

October 18- Chiefs only fullback Ronnie Cruz is out for the year with a knee injury suffered in the Steelers game.

October 15 - Chiefs anihilated at Pittsburgh 45-7. Chiefs were down 31-0 at halftime. Joey Porter and 2 other Steeler starters did not even play.
Chiefs can't run Johnson up the middle every play. Any NFL team can stop it.
Highlight of the game was Johnson's hair tackle of Steeler's Polamalu.
Chiefs at 2-3 are 2 games behind both the Broncos and Chargers in the AFC West.
KC plays at home against the Chargers Sunday at noon. Complete Play-by-Play

October 8- Chiefs win a last minute 23-20 victory at Arizona in an exciting and memorable game for Chiefs fans. AZ went up 7-0 on a 49 yard pass, Matt Leinart's first career pass as an NFL starter. Cardinals led 14-0 RB Larry Johnson fumbled for a turnover twice and was ineffective as a runner but scored a great touchdown on a short pass following a blocked punt by safety Pollard.  Ty Law gambled and intercepted a fourth quarter pass that led to the tying field goal. Later, Johnson took a short pass for 80 yards, was injured on the play by a vicious face mask tackle and had  to watch from the sidelines as replacement Dee Brown fumbled, TE Jason Dunn recovered and Lawrence Tynes kicked the winner.  Complete game play by play

October 2 -What a season so far! Bengals win at the Steelers and then come home to get spanked by the Patriots who got embarassed the previous week at home by the Broncos who barely got by the lowly Chiefs at Denver. 4 and Colts barely squeeze past the Jets. Baltimore is 4-0 pulling out a narrow home victory against the Chargers.
October 1 - Chiefs near perfection with a 41-0 home victory over the 49ers. Niners over-committed to stop the running of Larry Johnson and #2 QB Huard connected consistantly.
Niners had previously beaten the Rams who knocked of Denver in Week 1.

September 29th- Red Friday preceeding 49ers at Chiefs at noon. Locally televised on channel 4.  Chiefs are a 7 point favorite? Unbelievable for a team that has only scored an average of 8 points a game.
Starting OLT Kyle Turley is questionable. Ok....he has always been questionable but I mean he may not play due to injury rather than lack of ability.
Starting QB Green is out with head injury.
September  17 2006 - Chiefs stay surprisingly close and lose 9-6 at Denver with Huard at QB
September 10 2006 -Trent Green suffered the worst blow to the head I have ever seen. He was wheeled off right in front of me.  Despite media speculation I would wager he will never play another down.  Damon Huard looked awful in relief.
    Chiefs lose 23-10.
Bengals pull their offensive horns in by the third quarter.  Chiefs offense scores a meaningless touchdown late in the game.
Sunday September 10 2006: Here we go!  Chiefs will need to put up 28 to win. Bengals put up 28 in the first half against Green Bay starting defense. Vegas has Chiefs as 1.5 point favorites down from an opening of 4.5. Over Under is 47.5 down from 51. Will the addition of Ty Law and a rookie defensive end improve the Chiefs defense dramatically? Probably not as much as Larry Johnson, Herm Edwards and a ball-control offense. Prediction: Bengals 28 Chiefs 20

Friday- September 8 2006: Someone named Svitek is going to start at right OT. Wasn't he a doubtful for even making the roster?

Thursday September 7 2006: Pittsburgh with backup QB Charlie Batch defeats Miami in the first game of the year. Real snoozer.  So much for Miami as the hot media darling team.  Had it been a pay-per-view I would have demanded my money back.

August 29 Chiefs won (yawn..) against the Rams. Boring offense. It won't work against Chiefs first opponent the Bengals put up 34 against the Packers.  Chiefs will have to put up 28 to beat the Bengals but they won't be able to unless they open up the offense.
Last pretend game of the year is Thursday against the pretend New Orleans Saints.
Chiefs hopeful Craphonso Thorpe was cut today reportedly because head coache Herman Edwards could not say "Craphonso" without snickering.

August 26 Next pretend game Saturday August 26th at 7:00pm against some ex-college, European and Canadian players wearing St. Louis Rams uniforms.
If I can draw any sort of conclustions at all from the first two pretend games then I think that the starting offensive tackles for the Chiefs aren't very good and the defense is still bad.

Thursday August 17: Another pretend game against a pretend team from New York. On channel 4. So what?

Saturday August 12: Pretend game against a pretend team from Texas. I think 7:00pm. You can pretend I am watching past the first quarter if you like.

July 27-2006 Willie Roaf's retirement hurts. The Chiefs were a much  better team last year with Willie than without.  Maybe he will heal up and come back  around mid-September.
July 24-2006 . Chiefs have a shot this year in the AFC West: Jake Plummer is erratic and eccentric at Denver. San Diego has a rooke quarterback. Oakland has not yet selected a starting quarterback.

Chiefs always draw a tough schedule: both Super Bowl teams again this year (is this some sort of a record?) plus the two most important games of the year are played 4 days apart (Oakland Nov 19 ...Denver Nov 23)
